Upgrade and expansion of MTS Ukraine DWDM transport network

Project objectives

In view of building the CDMA-450 network, extension of the range of provided mobile and fixed communication services and Internet access, PrioCom’s team faced the following tasks to:

  • upgrade the backbone transport network;
  • enhance the capacity of the existing data transmission system;
  • raise the network’s reliability and flexibility.

Solution

PrioCom experts in cooperation with technical specialists from MTS Ukraine developed, designed and implemented a solution, on the basis of which a fully connected reconfigurable optical network has been built for MTS Ukraine.

The project involved modification of existing and installation of new multiplexers that, when integrated in the existing network, set up a new backbone with a wider bandwidth and new capabilities of further network development. Each segment of the optical network provides for input/output of 40 wavelengths with the throughput of 10 GB/s in each direction at terminal nodes.

The network design proceeded from the need to ensure the high carrying capacity and flexibility of nodal points. So, the whole network is now divided into two segments, one of them being a fully connected reconfigurable optical network, the other - a line with reconfigurable input/output centers. Both network segments include optical cross-switching nodes, input/output centers and amplification nodes. Each segment of the backbone transport network provides for input/output of 40 wavelengths with the throughput of 10 GB/s in each direction at terminal nodes.

The optical network was upgraded using Cisco ONS 15454 optical transport platform.

Result

The implemented project opened up new prospects for further network expansion relying on the existing nodal points housing channel input/output centers and optical cross-switching nodes.

This enables enhancement of the network capacity and arrangement of optical channels in all directions of a meshed network segment. Input/output centers are upgradeable to the level of optical cross-switching nodes, to supplement the existing ones, and each such center can be expanded, if necessary, up to 8 separate directions. Since all input/output centers and optical cross-switching nodes are spaciously and organizationally located on platforms housing РЕ routers of the MPLS network, prospects open up for wide use of direct connection of a multiplexer and a router for traffic.

All activities associated with modernization and upgrade of the MTS Ukraine transport network were successfully completed in January, 2009.
