Basic ring digital transport Network for MTS-Ukraine. Modernization of equipment for Kyiv ring

 Project Goals

  • To ensure southern regions of Ukraine with a stable broadband channel of the transport system in order to increase general capacity of the network.
  • To increase transmission bandwidth of Kyiv Ring without stoppage in provision of UMC subscribers with proper services.
  • To increase capacity of the server for the network management system.
  • To take measures that will ensure a reliable protection of the network.
  • To ensure a stable synchronization of Basic Ring and "Kyiv Ring".
  • To increase skill level of the specialists at UMC Implementation and Operation Department, in the sphere of the equipment that is to be installed.

Solution

The project was conditionally divided by three stages; work within each stage was carried out in parallel:

  1. Building and putting Basic Ring digital transport network in operation;
  2. Modernization of equipment for "Kyiv Ring";
  3. Installation and configuring the management system server.

Specific features of the product implementation are as follows:

  • strictly established time schedule (5 months from the date of signing of the Contract to the date of putting all these systems in operation);
  • performance of installation and commissioning work provided that traffic would not be lost;
  • installation of an additional server for the management system; transfer of 1353 SH application software to this server was made;
  • installation of application software of the same version at all multiplexors in order to ensure correct operation of all multiplexors within the entire network.

11 multiplexors (manufactured by Alcatel, OPTINEX™ family, 1660-SM kind) were installed within UMC Basic Ring section; this has made it possible to utilize a "ring" topology in combination with the previously build section of the network.

This kind of equipment lets to select any organizational scheme of a transport network; this, in its turn, has made it possible to ensure a lower cost of the project. In addition, this has made it possible to create a broadband multiservice medium for traffic transfer with possibility of provision of Ethernet, ATM, and nxE1 data transfer channels.

The more logical synchronization system for the network (taking into account "network" topology) was developed and utilized.

A technology of protection of the multiplexor section was developed and utilized; this technology ensures reliability and self-restorability of the network.

In order to ensure due and correct cooperation of the system, the same application software was installed at all multiplexors. It is also envisaged to make further modernizations of transfer system up to STM-16 level.

Two versions of "element-managers" were installed at local terminals; this makes it possible to keep a simultaneous look-out both for new multiplexors, and for those multiplexors (of various versions) that were used earlier. In addition, this simplifies management of the transfer system.

In order to manage the transport system, an additional server for the management system was installed, and 1353 SH applied software to this server was transferred.

Kyiv Ring transfer system was updated up to STM-16 level, and topology of this network was changed.

In accordance with volume and nature of traffic, a mixed topology of the network was utilized; this topology ensures protection of routes on condition of their 100% backup in subnetworks (SNC-P). In this case, the system makes a selection from two aggregate interfaces and always selects that interface that would ensure the higher quality of signal. If quality of signals is normal and equal, then signal is taken from the interface that was configured as a working one.

Result

The realized project gives the quality assurance of communication and trouble-free rendering of services to clients UMC. It‘s caused by a wide choice of methods of network protection:

  • multiplexor section protection (MSP) on Basic Ring;
  • subnetwork connection protection (SNC-P) on Kyiv Ring at the mixed topology of a network.

As a result of updating the equipment of  UMC‘s Kyiv Ring throughput of channels has been increased in four times, up to level STM-16 that has allowed to avoid possible overloads of the operator‘s network and to increase its throughput. The full curriculum of experts UMC and PrioCom, passed in educational center Alcatel in Stuttgart (Germany), undoubtedly, enables more skillfully to solve possible problems at operation of modern equipment Alcatel OPTINEX™ 1660SM.
